Luau Kalamaku

A luau with a script. Luau Kalamaku stages a story of a voyage from Tahiti to Hawaii, with hula, chanting, fire poi and fire knife, at Kilohana Plantation outside Lihue. Dinner comes from an imu and a buffet, the bar is open, and the room holds several hundred. Creative director and producer Haunani “Nani” Asing Marston created the show.

The company

A show built on a plantation estate

The operator's Creative page lists Haunani “Nani” Asing Marston as Creative Director and Producer and credits her as creator of the show. Its team includes a stage manager, a Tahitian-segment choreographer, two kumu hula and a cast of about twenty-five. The Kilohana estate was established in 1896 by Albert Spencer Wilcox; Gaylord Parke Wilcox built the mansion in 1936, and its restaurant, Gaylord's, hosts the Manor House package.

The venue seats up to 800, per a 2022 audio-system case study; reviewers describe 500-plus in the room. A craft fair and grounds open before dinner, and an optional add-on takes guests on the Kauai Plantation Railway through the estate. Whether the railway and the luau share an owner is not established in what we found.

“If you only experience one thing in Hawaii, make sure you don't miss this.”

Reviews

What guests say

Reviewers praise the show, the fire acts, the covered venue, the open bar and waitstaff, the plantation setting and the train. Criticism: basic buffet food, a crowded room, a story that is hard to follow, sound trouble in one review, no poi and high prices, especially for premium seating.
