2026 Golden Lei Awards nomineeKailua Beach has had a kayak shop on it since 1982, under three names. The current one keeps the same idea: rent a boat, or paddle out with a lifeguard-certified guide to the Mokulua Islands, the twin bird sanctuaries a mile offshore, land on the beach, snorkel the turtle grounds and come back for a shower. Groups cap at eight.
Editorial spotlight. Kailua Beach Adventures is a nominee in the 2026 Golden Lei Awards. They did not pay for this page and had no say in it. We earn a commission when you book through the links here; your price is the same.
The company
The shop opened in 1982 as Kailua Sailboard Company, moved to the Kailua Beach Center in 1985, and became Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks, Inc. in 1995. It has since been renamed Kailua Beach Adventures. The operator does not name its owners on its public pages. It describes its guides as certified lifeguards and true watermen and women.
The stewardship side is the company's second pitch: it organizes beach clean-ups with school groups and non-profits, keeps a marine-plastics recycling station at the shop, and has guides do wildlife sanctuary restoration. The operator lists Surfrider's John Kelly Award for business of the year and Sustainable Tourism certification, and Tripadvisor gave it a 2026 Travelers' Choice award.
“The premier kayak and SUP rental shop.”
Owner and team names are not published; the shop has a team page, “Our Ohana.” Guides Tomo, Maggie, Mike and Brian are named in recent reviews.
